Internship: Curious City in Maine

Posted on October 10, 2011

In the summer 2011, Laura Donovan '12 worked at Curious City in Portland, Maine after meeting Wheaton College Alumna Kirsten Cappy '92 at a Majors Connection event earlier in February.

Curious City is a children's book consulting company that works to connect young readers to booksellers and authors. Curious City addresses the promotional gaps felt by many children’s book authors and illustrators. As an intern Laura worked on two projects, the promotion of The Accidental Adventures of India McAllister by Charlotte Agell, and compiling volumes for the HADI collection.

For the HADI collection Laura gathered a list of titles that dealt with Middle Eastern themes or characters so as to create a package of texts and a lesson plans with the collaboration of the authors and illustrations for use in middle and elementary schools. The collection is specifically focused on Muslims, both in America and abroad.

Working with authors, middle eastern students visitors and educators, Laura feels she was able to apply her degree to "create education tools that create greater understanding and tolerance of other cultures."
