Internship: Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History
Posted on October 5, 2010
Ashley Wich '13 interned at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History in the Summer of 2010. During her internship she got a sense as to how she could use what she learns in Anthropology towards her career.
"Over the summer, I went to Washington D.C. for a brief internship/project at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. There, I worked with an ornithologist named Dr. Carla Dove who worked in the Feather Identification Lab and a pre doctoral fellow named Clark Sage. Dr. Dove’s works include investigating bird strikes, one of the most prominent bird strikes being the Hudson River airplane crash in 2009. Together we helped Clark identify specific bird species on feathered (Sioux)Lakota Indian artifacts from the museum’s collection as a part of his anthropological research. Although short, the internship was an incredible experience and helped my understanding of how Anthropology can be applied towards different careers in society today. "
