Resumes, Cover Letters, and Interview Basics
Whether you are applying for a summer job, a volunteer opportunity or your first job after graduation, you will need 4 basic tools: a resume, a cover letter, an ability to network and sharp interviewing skills.
A resume is a written document that strategically highlights your education, experiences, and skills so that an employer or internship sponsor can quickly see what you have to offer.
A cover letter tells a prospective internship sponsor or employer why you are applying and where you see the fit between what you have to offer and what they seek. It is most effective when it is individually focused on the requirements of the position and offers specific examples that illustrate how you are qualified.
An interview is a two way interaction. The employer is determining if you are the right candidate for the position, and you can be learning if the
organization and position are a good fit for you. It is your opportunity to present why an employer or internship sponsor should choose you.
Networking is essential to the job search process. Not only does it help you to learn more about a chosen field, but it gives you a chance to meet and develop relationships with people in those fields. Today, networking means much more than
attending a Chamber of Commerce event. Networking opportunities include professional associations, school functions, religious or social clubs, friends and family - and let us not forget social networking!
