Learning Outcomes for Beyond the West

The guidelines for the Beyond the West may be reached in a number of ways. Those four goals may be rewritten as follows, stressing their nature as learning outcomes:

Through courses designed to counterbalance the navigational pull of curricular offerings that posit the investigation of historical events, literary and artistic interpretation, and analysis of social phenomena in terms of the realities of

European heritage and experience:

1) Students will learn the importance of addressing the value of non-Western perspectives in all matters that are central to personal, intellectual, social, and societal identity;

2) Students will develop a capacity for active critical engagement with non-Western perspectives, cultural products, and texts;

3) Students will gain a facility for understanding the complex cultural processes of the construction of knowledge and its cultural and geographic contexts.
