Russian Club Teas
and other Club events, 2007-2008

What are these Russian teas? -- The Russian Teas became a tradition of the Russian Club in 2002. Russian teas are put together by the Russian Club (Evan Bell, president) and our Language assistant Marina Mayakina, with help from the Russian Club, and even the faculty.

Why? -- Because one of the key elements of Russian culture is "obshitel'nost." This untranslatable word means, roughly, sociability, collegiality, the ability and willingness to spend time with others. It is a highly valued personality trait in Russia, and we thought it would be a nice trait to emulate.

What do we do? -- We get together and hang out, actively practice our "obshitel'nost." We drink Russian tea, of course, and Russian fruit juices (Mors) or even soda. We eat Russian delicacies ranging from blinys to spicy carrot salad to Russian candies to red caviar canapes. Sometimes we make the food ourselves, which adds more zest to the proceedings.
Often a member of the Russian Club, or a friend or visitor, will do a short, informal presentation on a relevant topic.Very low key, low pressure.

Does one have to know Russian? -- In a word, no. Most conversations are in English, and we welcome all our friends with an interest in Russian culture.

Where and when? -- This semester, late Friday afternoon, every two weeks or so. The exact time and place varies, so check your Wheaton Calendars.

Do we actually have a samovar? -- Well, no. We use water-boiling kettles ... ah, technology. But the picture is pretty,

Who may come? -- Students of Russian and all friends, colleagues, roommates. All members of the community are welcome.
