101-102. Basic Spanish at Wheaton College is a yearlong course conducted by intensive oral method for students with no preparation in the language. Its goal is to provide more than a basic knowledge of Spanish while developing the fundamental skills: understanding, speaking, reading, writing and cultural awareness. Four class meetings per week plus work in the language laboratory/ library/ media center.

REQUIRED TEXTS

  • ¿Qué tal? An Introductory Course, 5 edition. Dorwick, Pérez-Gironés, Knorre, Glass, & Villarreal. McGraw-Hill, 1999.
  • Workbook / Laboratory Manual (Volume One), for¿Qué tal? Arana, Arana & Sabló-Yates, 1999
  • Student CD, provides additional vocabulary practice for each chapter
  • OPTIONAL: ¿Qué tal? -- CD-ROM ... In each lesson, many activities focus on the vocabulary and grammar presented in the corresponding chapter of the textbook. Others introduce you to characters from the video, inviting you to write to them on e-mail or to converse with them. The CD-ROM has recording and printing capabilities, and also contains a "talking" dictionary, helpful verb charts, and the McGraw-Hill Electronic Language Tutor (MHELT).

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

  • Meet four days a week, including Thursdays with language assistant Erika Schulz from Argentina.
  • Attendance is required at all classes; students who miss one-third of classes will automatically fail the class. You are allowed UP TO THREE ABSENCES, to be used for illnesses and emergency. Further absences will lower your grade, no matter how convincing your reasons.
  • Participation is crucial, and graded. A consistent and high level of participation is expected of all.
  • 1.5 to 2 hours of preparation are required per hour of class time. Regular and consistent preparation is expected of all students. No work will be accepted late. Prepare every day, not just at exam time.
  • All written/oral work and all exams are to be done on time and must conform to the Honor Code.
  • You must take the final exam no matter how great your grade is going in. No final exam, no grade and no credit.

GRADES

  • Class attendance/preparation/ participation. Half of this grade reflects attendance and active, consistent preparation. The other half reflects your preparation and is based on the quizzes you take in class. 30%

  • Tests of each unit, in class: 30%
  • Final exam: 20%
