New Student Orientation Schedule

August 29 - September 1, 2009

Times and locations are subject to change. A finalized schedule will be available at New Student Sign-In.

7 a.m. - 10 a.m.
Breakfast. Arrived early, need a break from move-in? Grab breakfast in the dining hall. Students are on the meal plan, family members are "pay at the door". Chase Round Dining Hall.

8 a.m.-1 p.m.
Residence Hall Move-In. Follow the signs to your assigned residence hall. Check insideWheaton's New Student tab to learn more.

8 a.m.-1 p.m.
New Student Sign-In. Orientation begins-pick up a program and registration material, confirm health records and much more. Atrium, Balfour-Hood Campus Center.

8 a.m.-1 p.m.
Your Wheaton ID. Remember to have your picture taken for your Wheaton identification card. Your ID will be required to access the dining halls, check items out of the library and use your "Lyons Bucks". You should have your photo taken on the day scheduled on your appointment card you will receive at sign-in. Media Center, Balfour-Hood Campus Center.

8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Library Open House and Tours. Library Open House will be open for tours. Refreshments will be served.

11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.
Opening Day Picnic in the Dimple. In case of rain, last names A-M in Chase Dining Halls and N-Z in Emerson Dining Hall.

1:30 p.m.- 2:30 p.m.
New Student and Family Meeting. A formal welcome to students and families from President Ronald A. Crutcher, faculty, administrators and the Student Government Association. This is the first official gathering of new students. Beard Fieldhouse, Haas Athletic Center.

2:30 p.m.- 2:45 p.m.
Break Time. Parents and students go separate ways until the President's Reception at 5:15 p.m. Families that need to say their goodbyes early may do so at this time.

2:45 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
New Student Survey. The Class of 2013 and transfer students should remain in the field house to complete a critical new students survey. Beard Field House, Haas Athletic Center.

3:45 p.m.- 5 p.m.
Advising Team/Transfer Meeting #1. This is the first meeting with students and members of their advising team to discuss academic issues and expectations specific to new and transfer students. Preceptors prepare students for their advising meetings with faculty. If available, faculty advisors and administrative mentors will attend. Advising Team Meeting Locations.

5:15 p.m.
President's Reception. President Crutcher, faculty and administrators greet new students and families. Hood Courtyard, between Watson and Meneely. In case of rain, Haas Concourse, Mars Arts and Humanities.

6 p.m.
Family Farewell. New students say goodbye to their families before gathering on residence hall floors to prepare for dinner.

6p.m.-7 p.m.
Dinner. Emerson and Chase Dining Halls.

7 p.m.-8 p.m.
Floor Meetings. Discussion and Q&A related to living in a residential community.

7p.m.
New Commuter Student Meeting. Explore the resources available on campus that you will find particularly helpful as a commuter. Cafe, Balfour Hood Campus Center.

8 p.m.
Lyons Pride. Students gather in their quads and proceed to Cole Memorial Chapel. Class of 2013 be sure to wear blue, your class color! Transfer students your class colors are green for Class of 2012 and yellow for Class of 2011.

8:30 p.m. - 10 p.m.
Candlelighting Ceremony. A time-honored Wheaton tradition. The Class of 2013 and new transfer students will be welcomed with campus ghost stories and traditions, followed by the lighting of candles around Peacock Pond. Cole Memorial Chapel.

10:30 p.m. - Midnight
Night Games. Capture the flag, glow stick tag and Frisbee are campus favorites. Grab your floor and enjoy a great evening of friendly competition. Chapel Field. In case of rain, Balfour-Hood Campus Center.

10:30 p.m. - Midnight
Make a Statement. Create your own personalized ID pouches, buttons, recycled instruments and art. Atrium, Balfour Hood Campus Center.

10:30 p.m - Midnight
Live @ the Loft. Come visit Wheaton's evening hot spot! Hipbone, a student band will perform with their high energy style. Free Pizza! Loft, Balfour-Hood Campus Center.

7:30 a.m.- 9 a.m
Breakfast. Chase Dining Halls.

8 a.m.- 1 p.m.
Your Wheaton ID. Check the appointment card you received at sign-in for your appointment to have your photo taken. Media Center, Balfour-Hood Campus Center.

8:30 a.m.- 11:15 a.m.
Placement Exams. Students with a documented disability who need accommodations for placement exams should call or visit Academic Advising (508-286-8215) by 5 p.m. on Saturday August 29th.

Math Advising Assistance. Concerned about your selection of a mathematics course? Wondering about the level of a calculus placement? Get answers to these questions and all questions mathematical. 2:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m.
Persepolis (film showing).
Over the summer, members of the class of 2013 read and wrote about Marjane Satrapi's Complete Persepolis. Watch the award-winning film adaptation, co-directed and written by Satrapi herself. See how her story moves from comic panel to big screen, and after the film, stay for a discussion of both the graphic novel and film adaptation. Hindle Auditorium, Science Center.

3 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
Games in the Dimple. Want some of that summer college fun? Come out to the Dimple with your friends for some Frisbee, soccer, badminton, or relaxation! In case of rain, canceled.

3 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
In the Corner Pocket. Get the ball rolling on making new friends by playing a game of pool. Game Room, Balfour-Hood Campus Center.

6:30 p.m. - 7 p.m.
Dinner. Chase Dining Halls.

7:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.
Floor Meetings. Meet in your residence hall with your resident advisor.

8 p.m.-9:30 p.m.
Drawing the Shades. Embark on a powerful multimedia journey into the experience and consequences of sexual assault. Beard Field House, Haas Athletic Center.

10 p.m.-Midnight
Mocktails & Music Legends. Do you love Madonna? How about Karaoke? Then come down for some mocktails and karaoke and let out the diva in you! Co-sponsored by the Alliance. Loft, Balfour-Hood Campus Center.

10 p.m.-Midnight
Balfour Carnival. Come one, come all to the Wheaton Orientation Carnival! Get some food, have your fortune read, your face painted and challenge a new friend to a carnival game or two! Balfour-Hood Campus Center.

7:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.

9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Individual Advising Appointments. Meet with your advisor to discuss your academic goals and review and finalize your classes for the fall semester. Your appointment will have been assigned by your preceptor during the first advising team meeting/transfer meeting. Advisor's office.

10 a.m. - 11 a.m.
Health Careers Forum. Students interested in health careers (medicine, dentistry, optometry, veterinary science, physical therapy, nursing, etc.) must attend this meeting. Find out about course choices for your first semester and what you can do now to enhance your chances of acceptance into graduate/professional programs. Knapton Lecture.

Pre-Engineering Forum. Students considering Wheaton's dual-degree programs in engineering, or careers in engineering, must attend this meeting before finalizing registration with their advisor. Meet Professor of Physics, John Collins, to learn what you must do in your first year to be considered for these very competitive programs. Science Center B209.

Education Career Forum. Students interested in early childhood, elementary and secondary education must attend this meeting. Learn about Wheaton's education minors, restrictions on courses, curriculum requirements, and the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL). Emphasis will be on early planning to complete all requirements for the early childhood and elementary minors. Doll's House 206.

11 a.m. -Noon
Dual-Degree Forum. Students interested in Wheaton's dual-degree programs in communication, management, optometry, studio art, and theology are must attend this session. Learn about the curricula, the advisors, and the fall courses potentially necessary for successful admission to these programs. Discover the advantages and challenges associated with earning an advanced degree (masters or doctoral) or a second, specialized degree on a shortened timeline. Knapton Lecture.
Pre-Law Forum. Considering a career in law? Attend this forum to learn what you can do to enhance your law school potential and how to plan academically and experientially for law school admission. Hear about courses, test prep, and internships. Knapton 315.

11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.

12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.
New Student Transfer Luncheon. Meet officers of the sophomore and junior classes, representatives from Student Government Association, the Office of Student Life and the academic advising centers as they highlight resources available to you on your accelerated path to graduation. Chase Small, Chase Dining Hall.

1:30 p.m.-4 p.m.
Sidekick Fair. Everyone needs help to spark action inside and outside the classroom. Meet the people who will act as your sidekicks and help you along the way. The Dimple, Upper Campus. In case of rain, Atrium, Balfour-Hood Campus Center.

3 p.m.-6:30 p.m.
GATRA Ride-Along. Don't know how to get around in Norton? Learn all about riding the GATRA and how to get to Providence and Boston! Meet in the Slype, the arched entrance on Howard Street.

4 p.m.-6 p.m.
Pick up your Wheaton ID. Atrium, Balfour-Hood Campus Center. In case of rain, Chase Dining Hall.

4 p.m.-7 p.m.
Campus BBQ & Games on the Dimple. Come out for a traditional Campus BBQ. Challenge another residence hall floor or FYS to a friendly game of volleyball or touch football. Dimple, Upper Campus. In case of rain, Chase Dining Halls (games canceled).

7 p.m.-8 p.m.
Floor Meetings. Meet with your resident advisor in your residence hall.

8 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.
Privilege and Perceptions. Follow along as we take a journey through first-year fears. Student actors will portray and share common college experiences amid the privilege and perceptions of personal independence. Beard Field House, Haas Athletic Center.

9:30 p.m.-Midnight
Jam Night. Wheaton's student-managed coffeehouse is the perfect place to relax. Listen to music while enjoying a cup of coffee in an eclectic and welcoming setting. Sponsored by the Lyons Den. The Lyons Den, 26 Taunton Avenue.

10 p.m.-Midnight
Outdoor Movie Night. Bring a blanket, grab a snack, sit back and enjoy the show. Tonight's feature will be the summer blockbuster, Star Trek. Co-Sponsored by BACCHUS. Dimple, Upper Campus. In case of rain, Dance Studio, Balfour-Hood Campus Center.

10 p.m.-Midnight.
Bonfire and S'mores. Who doesn't love to toast a marshmallow over a campfire? Enjoy s'mores while hanging out with your classmates. Behind Meadows, next to the basketball court, Lower Campus.

Living the Honor Code. Community at Wheaton is sustained by the integrity and personal responsibility of each person. We are all charged with upholding the values that make this a distinctive living and learning environment. Signing the Honor Code pledge and matriculation book is just the beginning. In this session, you will learn what it means to live the Honor Code. Meet in your advising team meeting location.

3 p.m. - 4 p.m.
Matriculation Ceremony. This event marks a student's formal induction into the Wheaton community. New students assemble to sign the Honor Code Pledge and the Matriculation book. Cole Memorial Chapel.

4 p.m.- 6 p.m.
Learn to Bust a Move (or two). Put on your dancing shoes for a fun workshop taught by members of Wheaton's performance groups. Dance Studio, Balfour-Hood Campus Center.

4 p.m.
Men's Soccer vs. Bridgewater State.

Women's Soccer vs. Roger Williams.

4:30 p.m.
Field Hockey vs. Salve Regina.

4:30 p.m. - 7 p.m.

First Impressions: Exploring Identity Appreciating Difference, Embracing Change. Engaging with issues of difference is essential preparation for living in an increasingly diverse American society and global community. Appreciating, negotiating and embracing difference are central to a Wheaton education. Gather with other students to share and explore thoughts and feelings about these issues and the impact they can have on campus and within the larger society. Beard Field House, Haas Athletic Center.

9:15 p.m.- 9:45 p.m.
Taste of Norton Social. Mix and mingle as you sample a variety of local eateries. Many campus favorites have donated pizza, munchies and more to welcome you to the community. Rear of Beard Field House, Haas Athletic Center.

9:45 p.m.- Midnight
Student Showcase. See the Wheaton performance groups strut their stuff! Decide which ones you want to audition for, or just kick back and enjoy the show. Beard Field House, Haas Athletic Center.
