When Your College Roommate Comes Out as LGBTQ
College is a time of freedom and self-discovery. For many gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) people college is the first time they are able to be open and honest about their sexual orientation or gender identity. Or college may be the time when someone, away from the influences of their family and old friends, discovers that they have a preference for the same-sex. About one in 10 people are gay, lesbian or bisexual, so that means you have about a one in ten chance that your new college roommate is gay, lesbian or bisexual.
