Safe Zone Committee
Mission
Through education, programming, and activism, it is the mission of the Safe Zone Committee to strive to heighten campus awareness of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, questioning, queer, and ally (LGBTQQIA) concerns and foster a campus of inclusion, affirmation, equality, and respect for all LGBTQQIA students, faculty, staff, and administrators of Wheaton College.
History
Wheaton’s Safe Zone Committee began in 2003 through the Office of Student Life and has expanded to include the Marshall Center for Intercultural Learning and Counseling Center as supporting offices. Upon its inception, the Safe Zone Committee offered an Ally training which was revamped in the spring of 2007. In the fall of 2008 the Committee implemented a Safe Zone Student Ambassador group in order to include more student voice. In the spring of 2009, the Committee offered its first Transgender 101 Training and expanded the committee to include a sub-committee, Queer Campus Inclusion Initiative Committee.
