Social Responsibility

Social Responsibility is Wheaton shorthand for civic engagement, specifically informed political activism.

But what does that mean?

SSSR encourages and supports passionate and informed political activism, creative approaches to social justice work, and respectful bi-partisan dialogue on issues of importance to our community, country and world through speakers, dialogues, film, art and spoken word events, and other programs.

Like what? Last spring we worked with the President's Action Committee on Inclusive Excellence (PACIE) to create our first Dialogue Action Teams.  DATs bring diverse members of the Wheaton community together in small groups for respectful dialogue and constructive action on issues related to living and learning in a multicultural world.  This semester's DATs will focus on the intersection of race, class and gender.

Other recent programs include the annual Oxfam Hunger Banquet, Clothesline Project and AIDS Memorial Quilt displays, residencies by Charles Neblett of the SNCC Freedom Singer and Byron Hurt, writer and producer of Beyond Beats and Rhymes, the Clothesline Project, and the  annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Interfaith Service, and Coming Out Week Solidarity Vigil.
