Wheaton in Wartime: From the Civil War to the Iraq War

This exhibit aims to give context to the current conflict in Iraq by showing how the Wheaton community has responded and reacted to major wars throughout its history. Illustrating the widely varied circumstances that have influenced Wheaton's response to war in the past, will, it is hoped, motivate the viewers of this exhibit to think about their own attitudes regarding war, as members of the Wheaton community in the present. At the Wallace Library through March 1.

Feature Films Available

Wheaton students may now check feature films out of the library for 3 days. Previously, all videos had to be viewed in the library. This policy will be assessed at the end of the Spring 2006 semester and will be extended if successful. Approximately 3000 films in VHS and DVD format will be allowed to circulate under this policy. Videos on reserve and most foreign-language films and documentaries will not circulate. These are designated "Videocassette Noncirc" or "DVD Noncirc" in the Library's online catalog, ELIZA. If you need assistance searching for videos in ELIZA, please ask at the Circulation Desk or at the Information Desk. Printed lists of circulating videos are also available.

For detailed information about circulation policies, check the Library Use and Borrowing Policies page at http://www.wheatonma.edu/Library/Info/policies.html .

Dr. Lori Arviso Alvord Event

On Monday, October 24th, at 7:30pm, Dr. Lori Arviso Alvord, author of The Scalpel and the Silver Bear, an account of her journey to become the first Navajo woman surgeon, will give a lecture in Hindle Auditorium. After the lecture concludes at 8:30pm, a short reception with light refreshments will be held at the Wallace Library, where Dr. Alvord will be available to answer questions and sign copies of her book. Copies of Dr. Alvord's book will be available for sale in the lobby of the Wallace Library at that time.

In connection with Dr. Alvord's visit, the library will also host an exhibit entitled "Beautyway: Healing and Ceremony in Navajo Culture," featuring books, images, and artifacts relating to the Navajos and their healing practices. The exhibit can be viewed on the main level of the library for several weeks, starting October 24th.

Changes to the OVID databases

By now you may have noticed some big changes to the OVID databases. While things may look different, the functionality has remained the same. Plus, there are some new features that allow you to do things like track citations and find similar items (depending on the database that you are using). If you have any questions about the new interface or would like some help with the new features, your liaison will be happy to talk with you. Or you can always call the Information Desk at x3700.

Please note: the new OVID web site will only work with one of the following browsers:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0
  • Netscape Navigator 7.0
  • Mozilla Firefox 1.0
  • (Safari 1.0 on Mac OS X is not officially supported, but seems to work fine.)

If you are experiencing difficulties utilizing the site with any other browser, we recommend trying the above versions to correct the issue.

The current browser versions are available from the following websites:
For Internet Explorer (PC Only): http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/
For Netscape Navigator (PC or Mac OS X: http://browser.netscape.com
For Mozilla Firefox (PC or Mac OS X): http://www.getfirefox.com

If you are still having problems, or would like some help downloading the appropriate software, please do no hesitate to call your liaison, or the Information Desk at x3700.
