Description:

Morning session: an introduction to Blackboard coursemanagement software.

This system has been acquired by the College, after being previewedby the Library, Technology and Learning Committee and by Librarians. The Committee invites proposals from faculty wishing to developa spring or fall-semester web-based course through Blackboardas part of an initial pilot program. Pilot courses will be showcasedat the May technology workshop.

The Blackboard system is already being used to deliver theOnLyon courses offered this spring by Professors Ed Tong, BarbaraDarling-Smith and David Powell. It will be available for generaluse by all faculty for the fall semester and enables faculty touse course web sites to:

  • post an electronic syllabus (some 40+ courses had electronic syllabi last fall)
  • activate a class listserv or other online discussion (28 courses did this last fall)
  • provide audio and visual clips and access to other electronic resources, such as those available through the Library's home page, directly to students in the course
  • access many other teaching tools currently in use and others which may be new to many faculty.

It has been widely adopted at other many colleges (e.g., Amherst,Bentley, Bryn Mawr, Swarthmore) and was the subject of a recentN.Y. Times piece (To view article clickhere).

Afternoon session: "Information Technology Goalsfor Liberal Arts Students."

This part of the workshop is sponsored by the Library, Technologyand Learning Committee and will focus on the Committee's draftstatement of information technology goals for our students (click here). This is part of the Committee's effort to insure that the roleof technology in the education of our students is an integralpart of the curriculum review.

After framing the discussion in a plenary session, participantswill break into smaller groups for discussions led by membersof LTLC. Each group will report back to the whole at the end ofthe afternoon.
