Facilities


Academic Computing facilities have evolved considerably since 1987 when it moved to its present location in Kollett Academic Computing Center, adjacent to the Science Center. Wheaton's computing facilities include:

  • A spacious workstation area with 30 Power Macintosh and iMacs and 10 Windows computers for student use.
  • A Multimedia Lab with 13 computers and a high quality color projection system in KACC (Rm 103). This room has several electronic keyboards, VCRs and monitors, to facilitate student work with multimedia
  • Satellite labs with about 60 additional Macintosh and Windows computers:
     
    Astronomy lab
    Language lab
    Math/CS Department Windows NT lab
    Physics lab
    Physiology lab
    Software training lab
     
  • A networked classroom with a high quality color projection system, 18 student computers and an instructor's station (all Power Macs) in the Science Center (Rm 102A).
  • Eight other classrooms and the Media Center in Balfour-Hood equipped with permanent networked computers and high quality color projection systems.
  • The Hindle Auditorium is a 200-seat auditorium with the following:
    • dual high quality BARCO data projectors
    • both Macintosh and Windows computers
    • VCR, Laserdisk and DVD players
    • Wireless microphone and sound system
    • TELEX system for the hearing impaired
    • digital cameras allowing broadcast across campus,with plans for cable TV

In addition, all classrooms in Knapton, Mary Lyon, Meneely, Science Center, and Watson are currently networked and each can be set up as an electronic classroom using a mobile computer-projector unit.

Two assistive technology stations are available in the Kollett Academic Computing Center.

The center is open over 100 hours per week, including 5 nights until 1 a.m. The center also houses a lending library. High quality black and white laser printing is available from all networked computers on campus at no charge. Color printing is available at a nominal charge. Scanners, audio, and video digitizing equipmentand other peripherals are available for student use.

The AC Software Server provides access to numerous software packages accommodating 21 academic departments, and available to all networked Macintosh computers. The lending library houses software manuals and distributes 34 interactive course-relatedCD-ROMs.

In addition to Academic Computing staff offices, several Information Technology & Services (IT&S)offices are also located in the Computing Center. These include the HelpDesk/Support Center, Computer Connection, and Microcomputer and Network Support offices.
