REPORT ON THE MODERNIST FICTION WEB
Abstract
The Modernist Fiction Web has three main strands: Reading Fiction,
with about 60 detailed files on different narrative elements,
especially as they become more sophisticated in the 20th century,
conventions, and notions of unreliability.
Modernism, with files explaining modernism and postmodernism,
as well as specific historical movements.
Culture/Theory, with files on Imperialism, Orientalism, Gender,
and theorists who are important for understanding modernist and
postmodern literature. I will be adding cultural/historical documents
and links to the web.
Pedagogical
goals and strategies
This web will supplement the readings in my Modernist Fiction
and my Joyce and Woolf Courses
1) to help students read narrative difficult modernist and postmodern
fiction
2) to help students understand theories and culture concepts that
scholars are applying to these texts
Assignments on the course syllabus are linked to the web. While
the hypertextual nature of the web encourages student to browse
widely, the assignments are designed for them to return to files
that are hard to master.
Description of project: The best description of my project is
on the web's homepage: http://acunix.wheatonma.edu/rpearce/Modernism/home.html
Evaluation
procedures
The project is being, and will continue to be, evaluated in the
following order:
1. I am sending my url to scholars with various interests in both
the scholarship and the teaching of modernist fiction. This worked
very well for my Multicultural U. S. Fiction Web.
2. I have asked my students for continual feedback and will continue
to revise the web throughout the semester. The web will be evaluated
more formally on the final course evaluation.
Dissemination
Dissemination will inevitably follow from the scholars to whom
I sent the url (when I did this for my MultiCultural Fiction Web,
4 teachers linked it to their syllabi). It will also follow by
virtue of being on the internet, especially since I've included
metatags, and the url is being sent by siteowner.com to 4 major
search engines. In the last year I've received a number of questions
asking me questions about my topics. A reporter on the Washington
Globe used my definition of postmodernism, which she said was
the best she'd found anywhere.
