I was asked to act as a mentor to Cristina Pausini whose project was to create SuperMacLang exercises for Basic Italian courses 101 and 102.
Although some SML exercises already existed, Prof. Pausini wanted to add others in order to allow students more opportunities to practice and review grammar points with instant feedback and comments. The exercises are to be a course requirement. Since I had authored SML exercises for similar level classes in Spanish I was very willing to help.
First Prof. Pausini and I reviewed the exercises that I had written in order to study (1) the types of exercises available (2) the authoring process itself (3) the feedback process (4) how the students would retrieve the exercises and send their results to the professor.
Every few weeks Prof. Pausini and I reviewed the new exercises created in order to check suitability and practicality.
The exercises intended for use in Italian 102 will be part of the course requirement for Spring '00. Those for use in Italian 101 will not be a course requirement until Fall '00 but will be used for review/practice of the fall '99 semester during Spring '00. A full working assessment of the exercises will therefore not be available until the end of Spring '00. However, based on my own experience in Spanish and the experience in Italian with the existing SML exercises I have no doubt that they will be a valuable component for both the students' progress and the professor's assessment.
Shortly, I will assist Prof.Pausini in moving the exercises to her dropbox and making them available to her students.
Prof. Pausini and I will continue to work together during Spring '00 to ensure that everything runs successfully.
I estimate that I have dedicated about 10 hours to this project so far. I estimate another 5 hours during Spring '00 for "maintenance".
