Goals by Class Year To Maximize Your Career Learning
First Year Students
- Dedicate time to self-exploration and gain growing knowledge about your values, skills and interests.
- Know about resources for experiential learning at Wheaton (courses with field components, study abroad, summer options, Fellowships, Scholar Stipends, etc..)
- Develop ideas and plan for experiences during the academic year and/or upcoming summer related to emerging interests.
- Write or update a resume.
Second Year Students
- Continue self-exploration and refine knowledge about your values, skills and interests.
- Creatively research and discern information related to pursuing experiences (internships, service, and summer jobs).
- Update resume.
- Enhance ability to write coherent and persuasive cover letters.
- Learn and develop interviewing skills.
Third Year Students
- Reassess skills, strengths, interests, values and academic competencies gained.
- Use self-knowledge, develop ideas and plans in relationship to career and graduate school options.
- Update resume to reflect experiences and academic knowledge related to emerging interests.
- Use spring semester to map out preliminary action plan for senior year in order to effectively identify and pursue career and/or graduate school options.
- Use summer to focus on an experience that reflects career and/or graduate school goals and enhances professional skills.
Fourth Year Students
- Identify and research one or more career and/or academic options for pursuit after Wheaton.
- Revise action plan to clearly reflect career and/or graduate school goals.
- Develop knowledge about salary negotiation, employment benefits, and industry specific salary ranges.
- Gain knowledge related to life after Wheaton including relocation resources, budgeting "how to", housing and insurance considerations.
