Weekly LyonMen's Basketball (4-1) Wins Two of Three Contests in Non-Conference PlayThe Wheaton College men's basketball team won two of three non-conference contests last week, downing Salve Regina University, 95-84 at home on Tuesday before falling at Emerson College, 84-63 on Thursday. The Lyons followed with a 73-69 triumph at Bridgewater State College on Saturday. Against Salve Regina, the Lyons shot 11-of-15 on second-half three-point tries, at one point connecting on six consecutive possessions. Sophomore Jaxon Leo (Leesburg, VA/New Hampton School) and freshman Anthony Coppola (Watertown, MA/Watertown) each knocked down five second-half treys, with four of Leo's coming in 1:38. Coppola tallied 24 points by going 9-of-13, including 5-of-9 from three, and had four assists. Leo was 8-of-12 for 21 points, hitting 5-of-6 three-point tries, and added five rebounds. Freshman Ryan Sasso (Peabody, MA/Bishop Fenwick) tallied 17 points, while senior Brent DiGiovanna (Hanover, MA/Hanover) notched 13 points. Freshman Bud Gaffney (Berkley, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) added seven assists and six steals, while junior Nick Michel (Hyde Park, MA/Boston Latin School) had eight points, six rebounds and two blocks. Wheaton suffered its first loss by falling at undefeated Emerson. DiGiovanna had 13 points and eight rebounds, while Coppola and Sasso added 12 and 11 points, respectively. Gaffney had six points, six assists and three steals, while Michel turned in eight points and seven rebounds in 11 minutes. The Lyons moved to 4-0 when Coppola is their leading scorer, as the freshman guard tallied 15 points, canning three three-pointers, and recorded four steals at Bridgewater State. Leo provided 13 points, and Sasso had nine points and seven rebounds. Michel had eight points and eight boards, while Gaffney tallied eight points, six rebounds, five assists and five steals. Women's Basketball (2-2) Wins Home Opener, Splits Two-Game WeekThe Wheaton College women's basketball team opened its home slate with a 78-48 victory over Curry College last Wednesday before falling at 2007 NCAA Tournament participant Salve Regina University, 66-56 on Saturday to finish 1-1 during a two-game week. Against Curry, the Lyons used a 13-2 run late in the first half to blow open a close game. Senior Becky Aitchison (Norwalk, CT/Trinity Catholic) recorded game highs of 19 points and eight assists, while sophomore Jenny Champney (Bedford, MA/Bedford) had 16 points and a game-best 10 rebounds. Junior Krystin Hickey (Manchester, NH/New Hampton School) turned in 14 points, five rebounds and three assists, while classmate Jennie Pleat (Nashua, NH/Nashua South) had 11 points. A 7-0 run by Hickey at Salve Regina brought the Lyons within five during the second half before the Seahawks pulled away. Hickey went 6-of-10 for 14 points, while junior Bri Smith (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) added 10 points. Sophomore Andrea Bailey (Needham, MA/Needham) tallied seven assists without a turnover and tacked on six points, seven rebounds and three steals. Smith moved alone into sixth place at Wheaton in career three-pointers (84) during the week. Men's (2-4) and Women's (4-2) Swimming Produce Strong Showings at MIT InvitationalThe Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Invitational over the weekend, as the Lyon women placed third out of six teams and the men turned in a sixth-place showing. In the women's 400-yard medley relay, the Lyons' top foursome of senior Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose), sophomores Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) and Emily Sweatt (Portland, ME/Deering), and freshman Dania Piscetta (Belmont, NH/Belmont) picked up the victory and finished third in the 200-yard medley relay. Pratt and Sweatt placed second in the 100-yard backstroke and breaststroke, respectively, and joined freshmen Samantha Farrell (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial) and Nicole Zais (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) for a third-place showing in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Freshman Stephany Perkins (Monmouth, ME/Monmouth Academy) came in third during the 200-yard breast.
