Weekly LyonSynchronized Swimming Finishes Eighth at Collegiates, Runs Top-10 Streak to 20 YearsThe Wheaton College synchronized swimming team took eighth place over the weekend at the three-day United States Collegiate Championship, running its top-10 streak at the event to 20 years when the meet came to a close on Saturday at The Ohio State University. Twenty teams scored at the meet. Wheaton's team routine came in 10th, as senior Megan Kinney (Los Angeles, CA/Marlborough School), junior Sylvia Syracuse (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore West), sophomores Laura Montes (San Juan, PR/Academia San Jose) and Jenna Swinkin (Hamden, CT/Hamden) and freshmen Jenna Calvino (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack) and Sonvje Ryen (Bozeman, MT/Manhattan Christian) comprised the sextet. Montes placed 12th in solo, while Wheaton's trio routine, performed by Montes, Ryen and Swinkin, was also good for 12th. Ryen was the national champion during C figures, pacing a 36-athlete field to become the third Lyon in the last five years to capture the C figures title, as Kinney was the last to win the crown, doing so during her freshman year in 2005. In D figures, Calvino finished seventh among 49 competitors, and Kinney took eighth out of 46 in B figures. During her first collegiate championship competing in A figures, Montes placed 43rd. For her efforts during the weekend, Montes was one of three Division III swimmers to earn an All-Collegiate accolade. Baseball (14-4, 4-0) Extends Win Streak to 12, Second-Longest Run in Program HistoryThe Wheaton College baseball team, which is ranked 18th in the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) national poll, extended its winning streak to 12 games last week, going 5-0 while remaining perfect in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. The Lyons, who are riding the second-longest winning streak in program history, opened the week with an 8-1 win at Brandeis University on Tuesday before downing host University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, 20-8 on Thursday. The Blue and White swept a league doubleheader on Saturday from homestanding Springfield College, 4-3 in eight innings and 11-0, before ending a 17-game road trip and winning its home opener against Endicott College, 13-7 on Sunday. At Brandeis, junior starter Brian Hughes (Dudley, MA/Shepherd Hill Regional) and classmate reliever Jared Barnes (North Attleboro, MA/Bishop Feehan) combined to yield one run on six hits, and the Lyons plated four runs in the third and three in the fifth. Sophomore Paul Malaguti (Andover, MA/Andover) went 2-for-3 with two runs while twice getting hit by a pitch, senior Jake Yagjian (Brewster, MA/Nauset Regional) walked three times, scored twice and had a two-run double, while sophomore Jeff Lieneck (Foxboro, MA/Xaverian Brothers) smacked a two-run single. With a 9-4 lead, Wheaton put the game away with 11 runs in the ninth, recording its largest inning since also scoring 11 times in the seventh inning against Allegheny College on March 15, 2004. Malaguti finished 4-for-5 with two runs, freshman Eric Laliberte (Nashua, NH/Bishop Guertin) collected two hits and four RBI, and classmates Sean Munley (Trenton, NJ/The Hun School of Princeton) and Hadi Raad (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY/Hastings) both added two hits and three RBI. Sophomore Nick Kostaras (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro) yielded two earned runs in six innings for the win. At Springfield, the Lyons scored twice in the top of the eighth and held on for the extra-inning win during the opener. Malaguti's sacrifice fly and Lieneck's bases-loaded walk plated the runs during the eighth, and junior Josh Simmons (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) notched his second save of the year. Senior Chris McDonough (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) struck out six over the first seven innings to earn the win. Munley had two hits and two RBI, while Laliberte and Yagjian each added a pair of hits. In the nightcap at Springfield, junior Adam Gingras (Woonsocket, RI/Woonsocket) held the Pride hitless until the leadoff hitter in the seventh beat out an infield dribbler. Gingras finished with a seven-inning one-hitter, striking out seven. Pecora went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, Munley added three hits and two runs, while Malaguti and senior Ken Depasse (Holden, MA/Saint John's) notched two hits and two RBI each. Lieneck launched his first career grand slam to help Wheaton squelch an Endicott comeback attempt. The Lyons took a 7-0 lead before the Gulls drew within one run, but Pecora smacked a two-run single in the fifth before Lieneck's sixth-inning home run made it 13-6. Yagjian finished 4-for-4 with two runs, junior Robert Foote (Walpole, MA/Walpole) had three hits and two runs, while Lieneck had two runs and four RBI. McDonough Earns Weekly Honors From Both ECAC and NEWMACMcDonough was selected Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Co-Pitcher of the Week and NEWMAC Pitcher of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, March 23. The NEWMAC honor is the fifth of his career, while the ECAC accolade is his second. On March 22, McDonough spun his third career shutout during a conference-opening win at the United States Coast Guard Academy. He scattered seven hits in a 1-0 victory, fanning three batters and walking none. McDonough set down 11 of his final 12 batters while allowing just one runner past second base. Men's Lacrosse (2-4, 0-1) Posts Second Straight 1-1 Week, Drops Pilgrim League OpenerThe Wheaton College men's lacrosse team went 1-1 for the second straight week, downing visiting Trinity College, 8-6 on Wednesday before falling at perennial Pilgrim League power Springfield College, 14-5 on Saturday during the Lyons' conference opener. Sophomore Drew Schaffer's (New Haven, CT/Loomis Chaffee School) marker midway through the fourth quarter proved to be the winner against Trinity, as the Lyons finished the game on a 5-1 run. Schaffer, senior Richie Rasamny (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow), junior Jeff Gomer (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and freshman Chris Landers (Manchester, MA/Proctor Academy) each scored twice, while sophomore Schuyler Horn (New Hartford, CT/Kingswood-Oxford School) made 11 saves. Rasamny led Wheaton with two goals, and Horn made eight stops. Rasamny is four points shy of becoming the 12th player in program history to reach the 100-point plateau. In addition to 49 goals, Rasamny is tied for sixth at Wheaton in assists (47), as he is close to becoming the fourth Lyon with 50 career goals and assists. Women's Lacrosse (4-5, 0-1) Posts 1-2 Week, Opens NEWMAC Play with Narrow LossThe Wheaton College women's lacrosse team went 1-2 last week, losing to a ranked opponent and falling by one goal in its league opener. Williams scored twice, and freshman Annalisa Carson (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) made 15 stops. The Lyons led Springfield by one goal with a little more than 11 minutes remaining in regulation before the Pride scored three straight tallies, and a late Wheaton goal brought the visitors within one before they fell short. Hurd recorded a hat trick, while Grant and senior Sara Dimick (Cumberland, ME/Greely) scored twice apiece. Carson recorded four saves. Hurd continues her climb up Wheaton's all-time charts. She is fourth in program history in career goals (137), as well as tied for sixth in points (154). The Lyons opened the week on Tuesday with a pair of run-rule-shortened wins over visiting Framingham State College, 11-3 in six innings and 8-0 in five innings, as senior Jodi Moynagh (Worcester, MA/Holy Name Central Catholic) fired a no-hitter in game two. Wheaton then dropped a pair at home on Thursday to 2007 College World Series qualifier Rhode Island College, 3-2 in eight innings and 3-0, before splitting at Springfield on Saturday, falling by a 3-2 count in nine innings during game one before winning game two, 1-0. Moynagh fired her second career no-hitter during the nightcap with the Rams, yielding one walk while striking out nine during five innings and facing just one batter over the minimum. Moynagh became just the fourth Lyon to throw at least two career no-hitters, having also tossed a perfect game last April 1. Wheaton's offense broke out for six runs in the fourth to put the game away. Junior Brady Benton (Concord, NH/Concord) went 3-for-3 with three RBI, two runs and a home run, while Poulton doubled twice and scored twice. Senior Alix Brozman (Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) was 2-for-2 with two runs, while Hunt and senior Erika Marini (Pawtucket, RI/Saint Raphael Academy) each had two hits. Benton was 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Marini added two hits. Moynagh allowed one run in 4.2 innings, as her shutout streak came to an end at 22.1 innings, before Poulton suffered the loss despite yielding two hits in 3.1 innings. In the second game, Bagley allowed just three hits in seven innings, but the Anchorwomen plated three unearned runs in the first. Benton and freshman Julie Murray (Canton, MA/Canton) each had two hits. Murray's first career home run gave Wheaton a 1-0 lead during the first game at Springfield before the Lyons held a 2-1 edge in extra innings, but the Pride scored once in the eighth to tie and once in the ninth to win. Moynagh allowed only one earned run during the complete-game effort, striking out nine and walking one. In the second game, Bagley did not allow a Pride hit until there was one out in the seventh inning, and freshman Marissa Hobocan's (Shelton, CT/Saint Joseph) two-out single in the first plated the contest's lone run. Bagley settled for a one-hitter, striking out four batters, while Benton, Poulton and junior Lynn Cotto (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield) all added a pair of hits. Brozman is eighth in program history in career sacrifice hits (24), while Benton and Marini are each tied for ninth in home runs (9).
