Men's lacrosse raises $1,800 for family of child with cerebral palsy

May 9, 2008

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team raised more than $1,800 for the family of Wesley College head coach Christian Zwickert, whose 19-month-old son Collin suffers from cerebral palsy. The sum was reached thanks to fundraising done at a late-April game and from donations by fans and parents matching that of Wheaton head coach Mike McCaffrey.

The Blue and White's contest with visiting Babson College on April 26 was dedicated to Collin, as Wheaton was partaking in the Coaches For Collin fundraiser, a nationwide effort put forth to aid the Zwickert family. Collin, who lost heart function and breathing capabilities while stuck in the birth canal for eight minutes while being born on October 1, 2006, was given one hour to live by doctors, but has remarkably survived 19 months.

Wheaton's fundraising efforts were established in order to help alleviate financial burdens on the Zwickert family, as Collin sees eight doctors each month while enduring more than 32 therapies. Additionally, he has in-home nursing 17 hours per day during the week and eight on weekends. Collin also takes eight medications, one of which costs $4,000 per month.
