Test Preparation Suggestions
MTEL Communication and Literacy Test
1. Sign up to take this test during sophomore year (May test date if taking April test prep course)
2. Sign up in the Advising center for the Test Prep course for Communication and Literacy offered each spring following March Break.
3. Obtain MECT Test Information Booklet, Vol. 1 and read carefully, taking all practice tests. Pay particular attention to scoring criteria for the summary and essay.

MTEL Foundations of reading
1. Sign up to take in fall of Junior Year (November date)
2. Attend all test prep sessions offered by Education Faculty
3. Form a study group and review all test prep materials as well as tests and notes from EDUC390 course.
MTEL Elementary and Early Childhood Subject Tests
1. Sign up to take this test in the fall of senior year, the November date, if possible.
2. Obtain MTEL Test Information Booklet, Vol.2 and read
carefully, taking all practice tests. Pay particular attention to
scoring criteria for the open-ended responses.

MTEL Secondary Subject Matter Tests
1. Sign up to take this test in the fall of senior year, the November date if possible.
2. Obtain a MTEL Test Information Booklet in the appropriate volume for your subject area. Professor Maher will have one or help you get one. Take all practice tests, and pay particular attention to scoring criteria for the open-ended responses. Check out the DOE web site: http://www.doe.mass.edu/teachertest/
3. Meet with your major advisor. Make sure that you have taken the courses you need for fullest coverage of the topics in your major, and ask him or her for supplementary materials (i.e., texts or anthologies) that treat topics you are unfamiliar with.
