About

Sustainability

Sustainability has taken root at Wheaton College—literally!

Wheaton has a budding apple orchard on campus, thanks to the initiative of two alums, Sierra Flanigan ’09 and Chad Mirmelli ’09. The long-term goal is to create a produce exchange among local colleges. Students will also work with organizations across the state to facilitate educational and outreach activities related to sustainability efforts.

Other student-led sustainability initiatives include a greenhouse project, overhauling four campus buildings to make them more energy efficient, exploration of locally grown organic food to include in the dining halls, the expansion of recycling, the addition of bicycles and a hybrid vehicle to the public safety fleet, and the hosting of a teach-in on global climate change for the past two years.

The college community’s shared interest in the health of the natural world is reflected in Wheaton's classrooms too. Connections courses such as The Environment encourage students to consider the link between environmental quality and the human condition and to explore the possibilities for equitable and sustainable technologies.
